Six of the Best Kinds of Cookies

Foods

For a beginner baker, cookies are one of the first and easiest things to make. There are six basic types of cookies and all have their own special methods to prepare. Here are a list of all six – with an extra one thrown in – to help you bake every one.

Molded Cookies

Moulded cookies are made by hand-rolling the dough and forming them into balls. Like peanut butter cookies they can be pressed flat with a fork. To stop the dough from sticking make sure to dust your fingers and utensils with flour.

Dropped Cookies

Dropped cookies are usually the easiest kind of cookie to make. Drop a teaspoonful of cookie dough onto a cookie sheet. Make sure you leave sufficient room between cookies for spreading. A space of about a couple of inches is usually best. If uniform size is important you may wish to use a cookie scoop.

Rolled Cookies

The dough for rolled cookies, or cut out cookies, is rather stiff. It is rolled into a sheet onto a lightly floured board and then cut into shapes with a knife or cookie cutters. Work with only a portion of the dough at a time. Use as little flour as possible to keep your cookies from getting tough. Rolling out thinner will produce a crisper cookie and thicker will make a softer and chewier cookie.

Pressed Cookies

Making pressed cookies – like spritz cookies – is easiest with a cookie press. The dough needs to be soft enough to pass through the press but stiff enough to keep its shape. If the dough is too soft put it in the fridge for some time. If it’s too hard, mix in an egg yolk.

Refrigerator Cookies

Also known as sliced cookies, these cookies are made by rolling the dough into a thick bar. Then refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake. Make sure you wrap the rolls good so they won’t absorb other odors from your refrigerator. The dough will keep for about a week. After chilling, the dough is thinly sliced with a sharp knife and then baked.

Bar Cookies

Bar cookies are more like cakes and are softer than most other brownies. They may be crisp or chewy. And they can be filled or layered. Brownies are one good example of bar cookie. Bar cookies are baked in a pan with sides. Make sure you use the proper size pan or your bars may not turn out right. After baking, cut them into squares. Most bars will cut better if allowed to cool first.

No Bake Cookies

As the name suggests, these cookies don’t need baking. To be honest, they’re not really a cookie. They’re more like candy. A good example is a no bake chocolate oatmeal cookie. They’re made using a candy thermometer and double boiler.

Coffee Shrubs Produce Powerful Industry

Foods

Coffee is the product of a seed that is grown both in rows in sun or more traditionally on the hillsides under shade. The coffee plants blossom and the fruit of the blossoms are the coffee berries. The two major species of coffee are the most popular Arabica and the more bitter Robusto. These berries are fermented, soaked, hulled and sorted, dried, and then the beans can be ground, whether at home or commercially, into many different forms of a consumable beverage.

The coffee plant is indigenous to the subtropical areas of Africa and southern Asia. It has spread for cultivation in warm areas all around the tropical Earth. From Columbia to Kona, Viet Nam to Brazil, coffee plants produce some of the most sought after berries on Earth. Coffee was first consumed in Ethiopia, but not in liquid form; the berries from the coffee shrubs were consumed by goats. The goats then seemed to have a positive reaction to the fruit, and their actions were mimicked by the goat herders. The caffeine in the berries, and its affects on the body, were then discovered and the popularity of the plant is now multi-billion dollar history.

The Muslims are credited with introducing the drink to Italy, and the Italians then helped to spread the drink through out Europe. England’s first coffee house was built in the late 17th century. What exactly all of these people were drinking isn’t always known, but there have been various methods of consuming coffee, from chewing the berries, to drinking coffee as a cold mix of the grounds and water, to the hot drink espressos and lattes of today.

As with many popular substances, coffee has had a past rife with controversy. It has been both banned and blessed by several religious organizations at different time in history. Coffee has been used in religious observances in Yemen and parts of Africa; it was banned by the Ethiopian Church. The Ottoman empire in Turkey also banned its use during a political struggle in 17th century and their have been many political rebellions across Europe regarding its use.

The Dutch imported coffee on a huge scale. They were so enthralled with the beverage that they were more than willing to ignore the trade embargo with the Arabs against exporting coffee. Seeds were smuggled in 1616 by Pieter van den Broeck into Europe and planted in Java and Ceylon.

The Roman Catholics, prior to 1600, considered the black liquid the devil’s drink, given to Muslims to replace wine. Pope Clement VII, who really enjoyed the brewed concoction, baptized the drink. Venice became a very popular import site for the beans, and coffee spread across Europe.

3 Super-Foods that Hose Down Disgusting Acid Waste

Foods

You chemistry teacher was right! Sinking a tooth in a glass of cola destroys the poor tooth in no time. Step by step, the tooth softens, breaks up and completely dissolves. Acid-forming foods and drinks cause similar damage if theyre not neutralised by our pH-regulating systems.

The problem starts when we overburden our bodies with excessive consumption of acid forming foods. Over time such a deadly cocktail of over-indulgence literally poisons your system and robs you of your energy and vitality. Also, it makes you prone to infections, allergies and other diseases. Below you will find three great foods to help you restore your bodys acid-alkaline equilibrium, cleanse your system and improve your energy levels.

So heres our first one…

SUPER-FOOD #1: Alfalfa Alfalfa is packed with nutrition goodness. Its calcium, chlorophyll, carotene, and vitamin K content make alfalfa an important nutritional supplement. The nutrient content of alfalfa is one of the richest known, making it a highly recommended herb for the human diet. Alfalfa is rich in many nutrients which include calcium, potassium, iron and vitamins C, D, E and K. This makes it a great herb for restoring strength to the sick and weak. It is used to treat all digestive weaknesses. Alfalfa builds strength and vitality and can be used to increase weight. Alfalfa seed also has cooling properties making it ideal for disorders related to heat and inflammation. Uses of the herb Alfalfa includes treatment for cystitis, burning urine, lowering fevers and lowering cholesterol, diabetes, ulcers, arthritis and rheumatic problems and lower back ache. Alfalfa sprouts have increased in popularity mostly because of their great taste and crispy crunch. A sprout is actually a tiny plant that is very easy to digest. Since these delicate sprouts have high water content, they will fill you up fast, but with few calories.

The next one…

SUPER-FOOD #2: Chlorophyll The molecular structure of chlorophyll is similar to that of haemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen throughout your body. Chlorophyll happens to be central molecule for increasing oxygen availability in your system. It is also vital for the bodys rapid assimilation of amino acids. The way to tell if a vegetable has enough chlorophyll content is by looking at its leaves. Algae are the highest known source of chlorophyll. Dark green veggies like spinach, broccoli and alfalfa are also very rich in chlorophyll content. These vividly coloured plants not only brighten your plate but also add a lot of nourishment to your diet. They are also a rich source of antioxidants and studies have shown that they go a long way towards preventing liver cancer, skin cancer, colon cancers and rheumatoid arthritis. Enjoy them cooked, steamed or raw.

Lets move onto our final power-veggie…

SUPER-FOOD #3: Spinach Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins C and A, and iron, and contains about 40 percent potassium. It leaves an alkaline ash in the body. Spinach is good for the lymphatic, urinary, and digestive systems. Spinach is a rich dietary source of vitamin K – a vitamin that unlike other fat-soluble vitamins is not stored by the body in appreciable amounts and must be replaced on a regular basis. Vitamin K is essential for the production of six of the proteins necessary for proper blood coagulation. Blood simply won’t clot properly without it.

It’s been hypothesized that vitamin K plays a role in vascular health. Low levels of vitamin K have been linked with lower bone density and an increased risk of hip fracture in women. Just 1 cup of fresh spinach leaves a day gives you 190 percent of your daily requirements of vitamin K. Alfalfa, chlorophyll and spinach alkalize and cleanse your body. Our high-paced, caffeine and sugar-powered lifestyles overburdens our bodies with an excessive acid load making our bodies feel tired, worn-out and prone to allergies, hay fever and food sensitivities. The toxins produced within an overly-acidic, oxygen deprived body may contribute radically towards runny noses, sneezing, itching and tearing of the eyes, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, skin rash and other allergic reactions.

Your body needs a slightly alkaline pH to be able to perform at its peak level and remain in optimal health. Studies show that an alkaline body copes better with stress and resists disease more effectively. Alkalizing foods, like alfalfa, chlorophyll and spinach, improve physical energy, mental clarity, emotional well-being and even optimism. As a final reminder, you need to consume the above alkalizing foods regularly for maximum effect.

Finally, a Healthy Alternative to Energy Drinks

Foods

It’s close to quitting time and you’ve been feeling sluggish, lethargic and grumpy for a while. You know you won’t have any energy to do the things you need to do when you get home. You’ve had more coffee than you should (at least half a pot) and any more really won’t help.

What you need is a natural pick me up; one that has a pleasant taste. Is there anything like that out there? Yes, there is and it is called the acai berry. There are numerous products made using the acai berry which is a natural product with a plethora of associated health benefits.

Many products are available on the market which claim to give a quick energy boost. They also claim to have all natural ingredients in these products as well. Are you really sure you are getting what you are looking for? Most product simply don’t measure up and some may even be harmful to you (not what you are looking for, right). The acai is all natural and taking the world by storm one continent at a time; US, Europe and now Australia.

The acai is delicious, like a chocolate covered piece of fruit. Acai products, that can be used to make drinks and more, are available outside of South America. The acai berry is produced by the acai palm and looks much like our purple grape, same size and shape and delicious.

Grown in South America, the acai fruit makes up over 40% of the diet of the population. Acai is used in drinks, added to cereal, as a topping for ice cream and eaten fresh by the native population of South America.

The products of the acai berry, and the berry itself, have been considered for hundreds of years as a source of quick energy and held in high regard for its all around health benefits. The fruit itself is very perishable and can only be obtained outside of South America in a powder or freeze-dried form. As in the United States and European countries, acai berry products are now found in many Australian health food markets.

Acai berries have many known benefits, one of which is the amount of energy they provide. They also contain an abundance of antioxidants (more than red wine) and are natural source of sugar. In addition to all that they also have the enormous benefits of amino acids, protein and omega 3 fatty acids. Fibber, another dietary necessity, is also found in large quantities in the acai berry fruit. The berry has proven to be beneficial to skin, heart, internal functions and more. A great source of energy for any Australian seeking a natural energy boost.

When faced with a daily shortage of energy or power or thoughts of more coffee (not a good idea) or using one of the questionable energy drinks on the market, a supply of acai products in the office refrigerator will keep you on your toes. You can have a healthy energy drink anytime there is a dip in your energy level.

If you want to feel good all the time, then acai is for you!

There are many types of food dehydrators, but how efficiently do they all work? Those with a horizontal air flow accommodate different foods at once without having them all smell and taste alike when dehydrated. Heating elements should be enclosed and the unit should have a dial for regulating temperature. Good food dehydrators should also have an enclosed thermostat that ranges from 85 degrees F to 160 degrees F, as well as a fan or blower. Be sure drying trays are included and are made of sturdy plastic. All of these features and more are built in to excalibur food dehydrators. It takes 12 square feet of drying space to handle a half bushel of raw produce. Excalibur food dehydrators can handle this load with models that have expandable features so more trays can be added.
